Wilderness Canine Search and Rescue in Rhode Island:

By authority of the Governor, the Rhode Island State Police (RISP) are the lead agency in any statewide search and rescue mission, and should be made aware of any reported missing or overdue subjects. The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) maintains a roster of skilled Canine SAR teams, and will contact these personnel upon request of the RISP. Skilled wilderness canine SAR teams are members of Rhode Island Task Force 2 (RITF-2)– a certification issued by the RI State Police to individual Canine/Handler search and rescue teams upon the successful completion of a comprehensive written and practical examination. ALL DEPLOYABLE MEMBERS OF RICSAR HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THIS EXAMINATION AND ARE RECOGNIZED MEMBERS OF RITF-2.

Handlers interested in becoming members of RITF-2 should affiliate themselves with an established Canine SAR team that is recognized by, and have a close working relationship with both the RISP & RIEMA. This will insure that you and your dog are trained using methods that are approved and recognized by these organizations.

RICSAR, along with the other recognized search teams provide all of their training for search and rescue FREE OF CHARGE. Teams may hire trainers to provide seminars for additional training or certifications.  RICSAR, Inc. trains on a weekly basis and has a close working relationship with the RIEMA and RISP. We will help you register for the RIEMA sponsored Basic Search & Rescue and Land Navigation courses – both are required by the RISP prior to RITF-2 testing. We will advise you regarding the purchase of all equipment necessary for wilderness search and rescue and train you in its use.  If you are interested in becoming part of active Wilderness Canine Search and Rescue Team, e-mail us at: team@ricsar.org
